Chapter Eight

Mark and Taylor were the talk of the school. Mark’s “girlfriend” confronted him in the hallway between morning classes. I didn’t witness it myself, but word was the scene began with Laura slapping Mark in the face so hard the sound echoed off the lockers and ended with her driving her knee into his nuts. I experienced vicarious pain simply hearing about it.

I had also heard Mark was hauled into the principal’s office for fighting. It didn’t take a genius to figure out how that came to be. I had spotted Mark only once during the morning, but it was long enough to see a boy mouth “faggot” to him as he passed. My heart went out to him.

I watched for Mark and Taylor at lunch, but they were conspicuously absent. I didn’t blame them. I would have gone into hiding too. Everyone was talking about them. Everyone watched their every move. If they had entered the cafeteria all eyes would have been on them.

I felt sorry for my teammates, or rather former teammates. I was also very relieved that I was invisible. No one knew about me. Even if I was outed I would not be big news. I wasn’t popular. I doubted anyone outside of the soccer team knew my name. If word circulated at VHS that Julian Brenner was gay the first question asked by most would be “Julian who?” and the second would be “Does he go to our school?” Mark and Taylor were popular and prominent jocks. They were front-page news. I’d only rate a column buried on page six.

With all the drama of the day before I had never opened the letter Brandon had given me. I had remembered it on the way to school, but there wasn’t time to read it then. I didn’t dare take it out during my morning classes for fear of getting caught and having to read it to the class. I didn’t want to risk trying to read it between classes either. Besides, knowing the letter was in my pocket gave me something to anticipate with pleasure. I still almost could not believe I had an admirer, but I knew for sure now that the letters were real.

I bit into my hamburger and then opened the letter. As I munched on French fries I began to read:
